VIGAN
In northern Luzon, the Unesco World Heritage Site of Vigan City displays precious remnants of the splendid architectural legacy of the Spaniards. The well-preserved colonial structures create a unique 17th-century European atmosphere. The town has several museums, thanks to it being the birthplace of several national heroes.
The other northern capital is Laoag City, which is a major crossroad for international trade and commerce in the Ilocos region, and gateway to some of the best resorts and beach destinations such as Fort Ilocandia Resort, Nipa Beach Resort, Pagudpud and Curimao white beach. Though bustling with business, the city has retained pretty much an unhurried, laid-back lifestyle.
Things to do
- Tour onboard the local horse-drawn carriages or "calesas" to bring you to Bantayan, the old belltower and Burnayan, where old fashioned pottery and weaving are done
- Visit the Heritage Village of Vigan, the only preserved model of a Spanish colonial town
